Zofran (ondansetron) is an antiemetic medication that inhibits the stomach's signals to the brain that would otherwise cause nausea and vomiting. Patients buy Zofran to prevent nausea and vomiting in a range of scenarios, predominantly after undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery. The medication is sometimes used in other scenarios.

Zofran is generally not effective at treating motion sickness, and should not be taken if breastfeeding a baby. Effects on unborn babies are unclear; discussing this issue with a doctor is advisable. Treatment Guidelines

In tablet form Zofran is most widely available in 4 mg or 8 mg doses. 4 mg doses are typically reserved for children below age 12, while 8 mg doses are for patients age 12 and up. Dosage doesn't necessarily cap at 8 mg though; many patients take 16 to 24 mg twice per day.

Guidelines for adults undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy:

• Take 8 mg one to two hours prior to treatment.
• Take another 8 mg 12 hours after.
• Continue taking 8 mg every 12 hours for up to 5 more days, if needed.

In some cases Zofran makes a difference but doesn't provide sufficient relief. In these cases the patient may try 16 mg or 24 mg doses instead of 8 mg. Again it can be difficult to find this medication above 8 mg, but patients don't need to buy Zofran in higher doses---taking two or three 8 mg doses is the same as taking a single 16 or 24 mg tablet.

For children under age 12 undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy:

• Take 4 mg one to two hours prior to treatment.
• Take another 4 mg 12 hours after.
• Continue taking 4 mg every 12 hours for up to 5 more days, if needed.

It is exceptionally rare that child doses will be increased beyond 4 mg, and this should be done only with doctor approval.

Adults undergoing surgery:

• Take 16 mg one to two hours prior to surgery.
• Additional doses are often not needed, but if they are another 16 mg can be taken 12 hours later.

For surgery, children below 12 years of age are usually administered Zofran in an injection by a healthcare worker.

For other conditions dosage & administration is more variable; doctor instructions should be followed closely.

Tablets begin working one to two hours after administration, and begin to wear off after 8 to 12 hours. Taking a dose every 12 hours should alleviate most of the nausea and/or vomiting experienced by patients.

In rare cases Zofran does little for chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and post-surgical nausea/vomiting, in which case a doctor can recommend alternative treatments. As mentioned above this product doesn't work on all nausea, such as motion sickness---try to be sure it is suitable for a given condition before buying Zofran.

Potential Complications

Zofran is well-tolerated, with common side effects being very mild. They include:

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Weakness
• Fever
• Drowsiness

Rarely more serious side effects are experienced, which call for medical attention. These are more likely at higher doses. Call a doctor if experiencing:

• Blurred vision
• Vision loss (temporary)
• Slow, rapid or pounding heartbeat
• Decrease in urine
• Feeling like or passing out
• Difficulty breathing
• Shivering or tremor

Before buying Zofran patients should be aware that it is associated with prolonged QT intervals, again particularly at higher doses. It is also more likely in patients with a history, including family history, of prolonged QT intervals, or in patients taking medications that prolong QT intervals. Be sure the prescribing physician knows of any history of prolonged QT intervals.
